More and more Norwegians are travelling to New York these days, and understandably, there is a growing interest in knowing what brands are cheaper to shop in NY than back home. One good article for this, which mainly focuses on designer goods, can be found here. And as I was about to comment on the article, my comment ended up being so long that I thought: why not add some more, and make this my next blog post?!

So, here we go:

  • Essie and OPI are cheaper in NY, and you may save an additional buck or two, if you buy them at Brooklyn nailsalons, as opposed to Duane Read or Sephora in Manhattan.
  • Watches: you can save thousands of kroners if you buy your watches here.
  • Redken, and some other hair-salon brands, are less than half of the Norway price. Try getting your products at pharmacies such as Rite Aid and CVS. Ricky’s and Duane Read may charge you a bit more. Note: I don’t think Kerastase is any cheaper than in Norway – or if it is, it is not by much.
  • Guess clothes, bags, and watches cost less than half of the Norwegian price
  • Nike and Timberland is less than half off, and you can get great sales products at any Footlocker. Though sometimes, you may get even a better selection of sales products if you jump on a train to downtown Brooklyn, and look around in the Fulton Street stores.
  • Converse shoes are cheaper than in Norway.
  • Ralph Lauren is cheap here, and you can get a great selection for both kids and adults, at Macy’s. Note: don’t forget to get your 10% discount card at the Visitor center.
  • Eucerin pharmacy products are cheaper here than in Norway
  • Vichy deodorants can be ordered from Amazon, and they are at least half the Norway price
  • Zara is cheaper in the US than in Norway (even though Norway is closer to Spain on the map).
  • Aldo and Urban Outfitters now have stores in Oslo, but I bet it’s cheaper for you to get these brands in the US.
  • Hair-extensions (weave) and wigs made from real human hair, are much cheaper than in Norway. There is a few stores in downtown Brooklyn, around Fulton street, but I know they also have a big one on Broadway. I personally prefer to go to a small shop in downtown BK called Fulton Hair Factory, because they tend to be very helpful, and they let me know if a wig is not really 100% human hair (even though the tag says so). Also, they told me that some wigs are more expensive due to the brand name…so you might actually get nicer hair quality by buying a cheaper brand. Good to know!
  • Vitamins and “helsekost” products are much cheaper than in Norway. Note: you are only allowed to bring a certain quota back to Norway, which I think is only 30 days worth of usage for 1 person.
  • Shiseido products are about half of the Norway price
  • MAC is much cheaper than in Norway. Here, a MAC lipstick at Macy’s costs only $15.
  • Bare Essentials mineral powder at Sephora is much cheaper than in Norway.
  • Mascaras (Chanel, Diorshow, etc.) are usually cheaper here than in Norway – but sometimes they been laying around in the store for a while, and are quite dry when you open them. Note: keep the receipt, and open the mascara while while you’re still in NY. If it’s dry, go back to the store, and you’ll get a new one or refund.
  • Mary Kay products are really cheap in the US – go here to see the prices. Order the products from an independent consultant before you leave Norway, and have your products delivered to you while you are in NY. You find the closest consultant through the MK website. Note: drop me a comment if you want to shop through my consultant.
  • Many other cosmetic brands are also cheaper to get in NY, so look around at Sephora, Macys, Bloomingdales, or SaksFifthAvenue to find the brand you need.  Note: Chanel skincair products are unfortunately not cheaper than in Norway, unless something has changed the past 2-3 years.
  • Buy designer brands through websites like Gilt or MyHabit, and have it shipped to you while you are in NY.
  • Go to GiltCity NY to get good deals for super nice restaurants, bars, rooftops, hair-salons, etc.
  • Golf  accessories – anything from golf GPS and binoculars, to gloves and balls – are cheaper in the US. Buy stuff online, or go to TheWorldOfGolf on east 47 street, between Lexington and 3rd ave.
  • iPads are cheaper in the US
  • Nike Dri-Fit golf shirts by Tiger Woods, are sold really cheap at Century 21 (outlet by Ground Zero). I paid only $25 for one that is usually priced at $75.
  • Century 21 also has lots of other cheap sportswear, if you don’t care about having only the latest season’s.
  • Order your fashion from ASOS, because shipping and returns are free in the US (not sure if that’s the case in Norway).
If I remember anything else, I’ll add it to my list! And feel free to drop a comment if you know additional shopping tips for people visiting NY. :)
